Alex. was nicknamed the "Haddy". This came about that as a youngster his father would take him for sails on the puffer which he worked on. Among the other crew members there was one called Sam. When introduced to Sam Alex. couldn't pronounce SAM and it came out as HAM. Thereafter the two of them were referred to Ham & Haddy. The nickname stuck and throughout his life Alex. was called the "Haddy". Incidently from this his own son Alex. was nicknamed the "fish" and after an accident on the puffer "Petrel" when the boiler exploded young Alex. was blown into the water and renamed the "Flying Fish". So much for Greenock humour. | Alexander Mc Kechran Hardie McNeil
